Notes for JUDGE WILLIAM 'JUDGE' JENKS:

Judge William Jenks (1674/75 to October 2, 1765) He married Patience Sprague first. After her death he then married Patience's sister, and widow of Daniel Brown, Mary Sprague Brown. He was the chief Justice of Providence County court and Deputy to the Assembly at Newport 1727. Described as a man of sound judgement, he served on the commission to settle the boundary dispute with Massachussettes. In 1734 he was the Judge of the Court of Common Pleas.

Judge William Jenks, son of Joseph, was born in 1675 and died October 2nd, 1765. He married Patience, daughter of Jonathan and Mehitabel (Holbrook) Sprague. He was the first chief justice of the Providence court. His children were: Joseph, who died young; Mercy, married Thomas Comstock; Ester, married John Comstock; Susanna, married Joseph Bucklin; William, Patience, married John Olney; Jonathan, John, and Mehitable, married Thomas Olney. The descendants of Judge William spell their name Jenckes. William, son of Judge William, had several sons, viz.: William, who moved to Brookfield, Mass.; Joseph, Christopher, and John. Jonathan, son of Judge William, had three sons: Gideon, Jonathan, removed to Winchester, Mass., and Nicholas, went to North Brookfield, Mass. John, son of Judge William, was born in 1732, and being a physician was known as Doctor John. He married Rachel Lawrence, and had the following children: Edmund, Henry, Jesse, John, Thomas, Mary (married David Smith), William, Lawrence, Sarah (married Doctor Ichabod Comstock), Caroline (married James Angell), Patience (married Daniel Comstock), Rachel, Isaac, Lydia (married David Lapham), and Abigail (married Jacob Comstock). Henry, son of Doctor John, was born in 1733 and married Amity Harris. His children were: John (married Sarah Smith and had three daughters and one son, Henry, who emigrated west). Martha (married Joseph Wilkinson), Daniel, Reuben (died aged four years), and Amy (married Thomas Arnold). Daniel, son of Henry, was born in 1771 and died in 1861. He married patience Bartlett. Their children were: Henry, Mary, living in Lincoln, Amelia P., lives in Lincoln; John L., was a physician and died at Hazel Green, Wisconsin; Caroline, died young; Sarah A., and George Bartlett, the latter two being residents of Lincoln. Thomas, son of Doctor John, married Patience Smith. It was an old saying that he had sixty feet of daughters, for of his eleven children ten were girls, all whom were uncommonly tall. His son's name was Rufus, and he married Amy Arnold. Their children were: Jeremiah, who left no issue; Pardon; smith, born March 15th, 1802, married Amy Ballou, and died May 22nd, 1886, left no children; George; Arnold, has no descendants living; and Mary, married Jesse Smith, of Lincoln. Pardon, son of Rufus, was born in 1800 and died in 1863. He maried Lydia W. Bolster, and had four children: William, died single; Willard S.; Amy, married Charles Bennett, resides in Pawtucket, and Daniel, lives in Southern Rhode Island. Willard S., son of Pardon, born August 5th, 1827, married Louisa, daughter of George Whipple. Their children are: Lydia, wife of William F. Jefferson, of Providence, and George W. Willard S. married for his second wife Rosamond Smith, and resides in Providence.

He was a freeman in Smithfield, RI in 1754 and emigrated to Berkshire Co., MA, 1768. He returned to RI in July, 1769 and then in 1770 he brought his wife and family to Berkshire Co. He owned land with his father in Sackville, NB.

Newspaper Files: April 26,1861, Friday paper: Miss Emeline Murray, daughter of Andrew Murray, fell and drowned in the canal on her way home from school on Tuesday evening. This was their third child to drown in the White Water Canal.

On 2/9/1876 in Franklin Co. Maria married second widower Coburn Murray (her 1st cousin, son of her father's brother Andrew), born 7/13/1844 in Metamora, Franklin Co, IN, died probably 1910-1920 Indianapolis, IN. They left her daughter and his four children from his late wife to be raised by their respective former spouses' parents. They do not appear in the 1880 census (may have been hiding), but appear again in 1900 census in Indianapolis. He was a packer, heavy machinery. She says she had 4 births, with 3 alive. She had at least 2 sons with Coburn:

i. Roy Murray - born 5/1876 IN (3 months after parents' marriage). I have only found him in 1900 census.

ii. Harry Murray - born 6/17/1884 IN, died 5/1966 Indianapolis, IN, abt. 1905 married Sallie B. unknown, born abt 1883 PA. He was a machine hand at VanCamp packing house. As of the 1910 census, they had 1 child, who had died. In the 1920 census, I think I found Harry listed as single, a lodger in a rooming house in Indianapolis.

iii. unknown - could have been born with either husband if died young, or could be a living Murray if the deceased child listed in the 1900 census meant daughter Sadie. (Patricia Brown)

However, Fred Mason Warner put together notes on family history. He listed Drusie Warner as one of his father's sisters. I found a record that Drusie Warner married Hugh A. Abercrombie on 2/7/1878 in Franklin Co, IN. But I have not found her in any census. In the 1900 and later census I found a Hugh Abercrombie in the Franklin Co. area married to a different wife, so perhaps Drusie died shortly after marriage. (Patricia Brown)

Kate did not have any children. After her mother Phoebe died, her widowed father lived with her. When we visited Franklin Co. in October 2004, we found Kate's grave in Laurel cemetery. She was buried with her first husband, and their grave was right next to the grave of her second husband and his first wife.

COL HIRAM ALLEN

Kansas' 19th Adjutant General

February 1, 1897 - February 21, 1899

COL Hiram Allen was born at Connersville, Indiana, on May 3, 1835. He attended college at Greenscastle, Indiana (Depaw University) and practiced law for a time. He was described as a "reformer" and at an early age became an active abolitionist.

At the start of the Civil War, his health prevented him from enlisting, but after recovering in 1862, he enlisted in the Union Army and was made Captain of an artillery company. He saw heavy combat and served until his discharge in August of 1865. On July 22, 1868, he was married to Minerva Murray, and shortly after came to Williamsburg, Kansas and set up a farm.

He was very active in the community. Among his activities were, the organization of the Methodist Sunday School, working to expand Williamsburg's economic growth, Township Trustee, County Commissioner and School Director.

He was appointed Adjutant General on February 1, 1897, and was responsible for the organization and equiping of the four regiments that Kansas mustered during the Spanish American War.

Starting in 1901, COL Allen's heath became very poor again. Around March 8, 1902, his daughter became very sick and he insisted on caring for her and staying by her bedside. For 12 consecutive days he went without real sleep, until his daughter was finally declared convalescent. Upon hearing this, COL Allen's health quickly deterioriated and after suffering a severe chill, he caught pneumonia. He died at his farm in Williamsburg about 5 p.m. on March 29, 1902, leaving a widow and three children.

Proprietor of the White Rose Mill, born Montpelier, Blackford Co., In, June 5, 1858, son of F.G. and Charlotte (Lowry) Miller. His father was of German descent and resided in Blackford Co. for some 30 years. Mr. Miller, junior has had the advantage of a liberal education, is young but large in experience in milling business, having worked in the business more or less since his 16th birthday. With his father's aid, he on Feb. 14, 1880, purchased above mill from Andrew Murray. This mill is one of the best on the canal; it is filled with all modern improvements, has a capacity of 50 barrels of flour per day, and its product is well and favorably known in this section of the country. He married 2-14-1880 to Miss Catherine Murray, (note same dates), daughter of Andrew Murray of this county; has one child Harry. He is a democrat and a member of Odd Fellows. Mr Miller, for a young man, has a splendid start in life, one we doubt not he will use it to the best advantage.
